ALDEN NOWLAN ON PLACE

Born near Windsor, Nova Scotia, in an area he refers to as "Desolation Creek," Canadian writer Alden Nowlan left school early ("37 days into grade 5") and worked a series of jobs before beginning life as a journalist. A voracious reader, self-educated, and all of eighteen years of age, Nowlan began his newspaper career as News Editor for Hartland New Brunswick's Hartland Observer in 1952. A decade of growing respect from literary publishers (see List of Works) and arts magazines permitted Nowlan's eventual departure for the Saint John (New Brunswick) Telegraph Journal. Working as writer in residence for The University of New Brunswick, Nowlan settled in Fredericton (NB) from 1969 until his death in 1983.
