Administrative history: The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation, Inc., a charitable trust, was established in 1985 to raise money and assist victims of family violence through the funding of shelters, special programmes, and public education projects. Named in honour of a native New Brunswicker in recognition of her outstanding contribution in the field of social action and justice, the Foundation later expanded its mandate to include the promotion and support of public education and research into the area of family violence and the enhancement of services provided to victims of family violence. To better fulfill its mandate, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research was established in 1992, in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts of the University of New Brunswick. The Centre carries out its research and educational work under the guidance of an executive director and board of directors.

During the past 15 years, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation has been involved in a number of other projects, including provincial public education campaigns; hosting "Challenge for Change", a national symposium on family violence; publishing pamphlets; and funding workshops on sexual assault and research projects on abuse and community response to victims' needs. In 1992, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Award was created to recognize the contributions of individuals or organizations in advancing the elimination of family violence. Past winners have included June Callwood, Dr. Peter Jaffe, Margaret Norrie McCain, Sister Cecile Renault, and Dr. Donald G. Dutton.

In the summer of 2000, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation continues to carry out its work -- fund-raising, public education, research, project organization -- from its head office in Fredericton.
