National Symposium on Family Violence [textual record]. -- 1986 - 1988. -- 13 cm of textual records
Administrative history: The first major project undertaken by the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation was the organization of "Challenge for Change", a national symposium on family violence, which was held in Saint John, New Brunswick June 3-5, 1987. The symposium addressed the question of how health workers and the general public could respond more effectively to the problem of family violence. Resource persons from across Canada were invited to speak on legal, counseling, treatment, educational policy, religious, and social responsibility issues. It was hoped the symposium would bring heightened awareness throughout Canada of the seriousness and pervasiveness of the problem of family violence.
The symposium was deemed a success, attracting over 200 delegates from all parts of the country. It also won the support of New Brunswick's political leaders, with Premier Richard Hatfield addressing conference participants at the closing banquet. As a follow-up to the symposium, The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation undertook to organize lobby groups throughout New Brunswick with the purpose of obtaining adequate funding to maintain and expand programmes for the victims of family violence.
