CENSUS OF POPULATION, 1996 & 2001

The most recent census of the Canadian population was taken on May 14th, 2001, but results from the census have not yet been released. The statistical information collected by the 1996 Census of Population are, however, available in a variety of formats. For example, Statistics Canada provides two convenient sites for getting census without charge:

Nation Tables Census page provides unrestricted access to tables with variables at the national and provincial level

Statistical Profile of Canadian Communities provides unrestricted access to tables with a subset of variables at the community level (Census Subdivisions).

These two sites do not include all the census data, however. For authorized users of the UNB Libraries, additional options are available, allowing more choice in levels of geography and in the number of variables. Many of these complete tables are made available within the constraints of the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) license.

Authorized users may:

  • View on-screen: view and manipulate Census tables at PCs on campus or through the UNB Libraries proxy server

  • E-Stat: access selected tables through ESTAT, Statistics Canada's educational site

  • Download the files for viewing and manipulation on your own machine using Beyond 20/20.

  • IDLS: view files or download current and historical public user microdata files, using the University of Western Ontario IDLS interface.

  • Census Analyzer, an interface at the University of Toronto which produces subsets from various census files

In addition to these files, there are Census geography files for those interested in mapping census variables, and the products of the Census of Agriculture, 1996.
