CENSUS GEOGRAPHY FILESThe DLI program allows access to geographical files in addition to data files to authorised users under the DLI license. The census spatial files are provided by Statistics Canada in both ArcInfo and MapInfo formats. The files currently available for downloading are in ArcInfo format but, until they are added to the web site, MapInfo files may be requested directly through the UNB Libraries DLI Contact. Spatial files may be available as "digital boundary files" (.dbf files) which reflect administrative boundaries or "digital cartographic files" (.dcf files) which provide a more accurate geographical representation. Knowledge of a GIS package, such as MapInfo, ArcView, or ArcInfo, is usually a prerequisite for using these files. Documentation and codebooks, which provide information on the files, are available in either PDF format, which can be downloaded and viewed with a viewer such as Adobe Acrobat, or as WordPerfect documents (downloaded in compressed format and, when unzipped, ready for loading WordPerfect). Print versions of codebooks may be consulted in the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department on the third floor of the Harriet Irving Library. 2006 CENSUS GEOGRAPHY FILESMore files will be loaded shortly.
Note that most of the standard census geography files, as well as water and road layers, can now be downloaded directly from the Statistics Canada Census Geography web site. For convenience, the NB profile data from the Census of Population, 2006, for census subdivisions and census dissemination areas, are provided here in a zipped .ivt file. These .ivt files require the Beyond 20/20 browser to view and manipulate the files.

2001 Census Spatial FilesNote: There were significant changes in census geography between 1996 and 2001. Users are urged to use the documentation referred to in the above list of links to understand these changes.

1986 CENSUS GEOGRAPHY FILESThere are very few spatial data files for the 1986 geography at lower levels of geography. Users who are working with 1986 Enumeration Area data for Fredericton will find the maps of Fredericton particularly useful, though they are rendered as image files. We do not have the original mapping files, but thanks to Mike Meade, of the Electronic Text Centre, the image or the original EA map allows us to better interpret the 1986 EA level data for Fredericton.
Only the three-digit enumeration codes are given on the map. For all EA numbers, the standard prefixes are 13 (the two digit province code) + 010 (the three digit FED code), + the three-digit EA code. Example: 13010160 is the enumeration area code for the University of New Brunswick campus.
