ADULT EDUCATION AND TRAINING SURVEYThe following files are available for use within the constraints of the DLI license to UNB Libraries authorized users. BACKGROUND
Statistics Canada conducted the Adult Education Survey (AES) in 1984 on behalf of the Department of the Secretary of State and the Adult Training Survey (ATS) in 1986, on behalf of Employment and Immigration Canada. In the late 1980s, as the number of adult Canadians pursuing education and training programs increased, there was a renewed interest in education and retraining as economic development issues. These concerns resulted in Employment and Immigration Canada commissioning Statistics Canada to conduct the Adult Education and Training Survey (AETS) in November 1990, and again in 1992.
The main objective of all four surveys was to measure participation rates. In general, each successive questionnaire evolved into a more detailed and comprehensive survey instrument, with greater emphasis on profiling the role of the employer and identifying barriers to training. In 1994, the AETS was modified to explore areas such as access to training.
The Adult Education Survey (AES) measured the extent to which adult Canadians participated in courses to improve job skills, upgrade academic qualifications, for personal development or for recreation and leisure.
SAS code is provided as well as the raw ascii data file. SPSS commands will be provided shortly. The documentation for this survey is in print format and may be borrowed from the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department, 3rd Floor, Harriet Irving Library.
The Adult Training Survey (1986) measured the number of persons who took training and educational courses in 1984 and 1985 in order to improve career opportunities, maintain or learn new job skills or for personal interest, in order to determine the accessibility of such education and training as it related to: (a) the type of program and course offered and who organized it; (b) sponsorship of programs through the employer or a Government manpower program; and (c) the cost and who paid.
SAS code is provided as well as the raw ascii data file. SPSS commands will be provided shortly. The documentation for this survey is in print format and may be borrowed from the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department, 3rd Floor, Harriet Irving Library.
