CANADIAN COMMUNITY HEALTH SURVEY

[CCHS 1.1] [CCHS 1.2] [CCHS 2.1] [CCHS 2.2] [CCHS 3.1] [CCHS 2008]

The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) is a cross-sectional survey that provides timely cross-sectional estimates of health determinants, health status and health system utilization for community health regions and special populations across Canada. The first cycle of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS 1.1) was conducted in 2000-2001. There are supplemental surveys associated with the CCHS, such as the Mental Health and Well-being Survey (CCHS 1.2), conducted in 2002 and the Canadian Forces CCHS Survey.

Up to 2007, the survey was conducted on a two-year cycle; each two-year collection cycle was comprised of two distinct surveys: a health region-level survey in the first year with a total sample of 130,000 and a provincial-level survey in the second year with a total sample of 30,000.

The health region-level survey will include a common content component, socio-economic and demographic questions, and optional content determined by each health region from a predefined list of questionnaire modules (See list for details).

The provincial-level survey will consist of some common content and one focus content topic per cycle. Focus content is intended to be an in-depth treatment of topical issues. Suggestions for focus content include mental health, nutrition and social support. It is also expected that a set of physical measures be taken for a sample of respondents at some point.

For more information on the survey, see the user guides, below. The following surveys are available for use at this time; other files will be added when they are released:

Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 1.1

The CCHS 1.1 includes information on a wide range of topics, including alcohol consumption, chronic health conditions, fruit and vegetable consumption, general health, use of health services, height and weight, injuries, physical activity, restriction of activities and smoking. It also provides information on the socio-demographic characteristics, the income and the labour force characteristics of the population. Data were collected from over 130,000 respondents, aged 12 or older, residing in households across all provinces and territories.

Canadian Community Health Survey, 2007/2008

Special Note:
Prior to 2007, data collection occurred every two years on an annual period. Data are available for the 2001, 2003 and 2005 periods. In 2007, major changes were made to the survey design with the goal of improving its effectiveness and flexibility through data collection on an ongoing basis. Data collection now occurs every year, rather than every two years as was the case prior to 2007. Surveys are now identified by date, rather than by survey cycle.

The CCHS now produces an annual microdata file (e.g. 2008) and a file combining two years of data (e.g. 2007 and 2008). The following links relate to the annual file; the two year file will be available shortly.
