NATIONAL PRIVATE VEHICLE USE SURVEY

The purpose of the survey is to provide provide measures of vehicle fuel use and the determinants of fuel use. The specific objectives of the survey are: provide national estimates of annual fuel use for personal-use vehicles (includes passenger cars/light trucks and vans); provide national estimates of total distance driven; identify the main factors in the purchase of a vehicle; identify in a general fashion how households use their vehicles; develop driver profiles by sex, age, marital status, income, education and occupational group; and develop vehicle profiles by vehicle make, model year, number of cylinders, transmission type, and presence or absence of air conditioning.

Three survey years are available for use; 1994, 1995, and 1996.

1996 National Private Vehicle Use Survey

    The data refer to personal use vehicles operated during the 1996 calendar year. There are 9,299 records in the file.

    DOCUMENTATION:

  • User guide, provided as a zipped PDF file, for use with Adobe Acrobat reader

  • Record layout, provided as a zipped ascii text file, for use with the raw data file. A SPSS command file will be added to this site shortly.

    DATA FILES:

  • NPVUS raw data file, provided as a zipped ascii file for use with SPSS or SAS syntax file.

  • NPVUS SPSS Save file zipped and ready for use with SPSS.

1995 National Private Vehicle Use Survey

    The data refer to personal use vehicles operated during the 1995 calendar year. There are 11,149 records in the file.

1994 National Private Vehicle Use Survey

    The data refer to personal use vehicles operated during the fourth quarter of 1994. There are 5,124 records in the file.

STEPS TO OBTAIN DATA FILES:

Links to electronic versions of documentation and SPSS or SAS command files are provided where they exist.

1. Click on the file you require to download the datafile to your hard drive. This will take you to the Statistics Canada DLI license under which the files are provided to UNB Libraries. After entering your email account, an authorization screen will appear.
