YOUTH SMOKING SURVEY [2002]

Statistics Canada conducted the first Youth Smoking Survey in 1994 on behalf of Health Canada. It was repeated in the fall of 2002.

About 19,000 children in 955 classes randomly selected from schools across the 10 provinces participated in the survey. They represent over 2 million students in Grades 5 to 9 most of whom are 10 to 14 years old. The children completed a paper questionnaire at school under the direction of a Statistics Canada interviewer. While the survey focussed on cigarette smoking, for Grades 7 to 9 it also included questions on alcohol and drugs.

Schools on Indian reserves and military bases, as well as special schools and schools in remote areas, were excluded. For more details on the survey, refer to the User Guide or the YSS survey description.

Steps to Obtain Data Files Electronically:

Links to electronic versions of documentation and SPSS or SAS command files are provided where they exist.

1. Click on the file you require to download the datafile to your hard drive. This will take you to the Statistics Canada DLI license under which the files are provided to UNB Libraries. After entering your email account, an authorization screen will appear.

2. You must enter your PIN number and your email address to obtain the file A dialogue box will appear with the note: "unknown file type" at the top.

3. Click on SAVE FILE, and indicate where on your hard drive you wish the data file saved. For example, you may wish to save your file to c:\temp and you would indicate this in the dialogue box which will appear when you click on SAVE FILE.

4. Unzip the file(s) and they are ready to use in either SPSS or with the appropriate software/browser (e.g. Adobe Acrobat).
