DATA FILES AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOADING -- Q TO S

The UNB Libraries has data files suitable for use with statistical packages such as SPSS or SAS.

dli graphic SUN EXPOSURE SURVEY (1996):

Data are now available for the 1996 Sun Exposure Survey, conducted from September to October 1996. This survey sponsored by the Institute of Health Promotion Research at the University of British-Columbia, was funded by the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Canadian Dermatology Association and Environment Canada.

The survey gathered information on the attitudes and behaviours related to the sun exposure among Canadians 15 years and over. Information collected (within households on a proxy basis) is available for children under the age 15. Data are available at the national and regional levels.

dli graphic SURVEY ON AGEING AND INDEPENDENCE (1991):

The objective of the Survey on Ageing and Independence was to measure contributors to quality of life and independent living. The survey examined a wide range of characteristics of today's seniors (aged 65+) and of tomorrows seniors (aged 44-65). The survey gathered information on such topics as retirement and main activity, labour characteristics and retirement preparation, physical and social activities, well-being, social support, mobility, accidents and safety, housing characteristics, and income /financial security. The sample size consisted of 24,795 individuals aged 45+ across Canada.

There is no electronic codebook or documentation for this file, but the print user guide can be consulted at the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department, 3rd floor, Harriet Irving Library. The following data files from the Survey on Ageing and Independence are available for downloading:

dli graphicSURVEY ON THE VALUE OF WILDLIFE TO CANADIANS :

This occasional survey collects information about watching, feeding, attracting, photographing, and hunting wildlife and what these activities contributed to the Canadian economy. This survey was originally conducted in February 1982 and was run again in February 1988 and February 1992. The target population consisted of civilian, non-institutionalized Canadians aged 15+. The sample size was 68,000 individuals. The codebook is available in print form.

dli graphicSURVEY OF LITERACY SKILLS USED IN DAILY ACTIVITIES (1989):

The objective of the survey was to develop a profile of literacy levels among the Canadian adult population. For the purposes of this survey literacy was interpreted as "official language literacy" and defined as "the information processing skills (reading, writing and numeracy skills) necessary to use printed material commonly encountered at work, at home and in the community". The target population consisted of civilian, non-institutionalised individuals aged 15+ and the sample consisted of approximately 48,000 households.

STEPS TO OBTAIN DATA FILES:

Links to electronic versions of documentation and SPSS or SAS command files are provided where they exist.

1. Click on the file you require to download the datafile to your hard drive. This will take you to the Statistics Canada DLI license under which the files are provided to UNB Libraries. After entering your email account, an authorization screen will appear.

2. You must enter your PIN and your email address to obtain the file. A dialogue box will appear asking what you want to do with the file.

3. Click on SAVE FILE, and indicate where on your hard drive you wish the data file saved.

4. When the file has been downloaded, return to the Data home page by pressing the "Back" arrow on your web browser.

  • To unzip a file if you work with DOS, download pkz204g.exe into the same directory as you are putting the file. After you leave Netscape and are at the DOS prompt and have expanded the file, type: pkunzip filename
  • To unzip a file if you work in Windows 95, download winzip95.exe
