DLI DATA FILES
[Download files] [Create a subset] [View list of
CDROMs]
The UNB Libraries provides access to DLI data files, suitable for
use with statistical packages such as SPSS or SAS, in several
different ways. Users can:
- download a survey (including documentation, where available) for
analysis, and/or
- create subsets of various files through cooperative agreements
with the University of Calgary and the University of Western Ontario;
and/or
- use selected files available as CD-ROM
Products.
All files are Statistics Canada public use microdata files made available though UNB Libraries
partnership in the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI)
and, as such, use of these files is subject to the constraints of the DLI license.
The University of Western Ontario's Internet Data Library
System,
IDLS, provides access to many of the Beyond 20/20 tables and subsetting under the same license conditions.
IDLS is also useful for finding specific variables, using the "variable description" search option.
Researchers who wish to explore further analysis using confidential (master) files from longitudinal
surveys may contact the Research Data Centre to discuss
eligibility for data use under the RDC program.

CREATE A SUBSET
Authorized users of UNB Libraries are able to create subsets for
various DLI files through agreements with the University of Toronto,
the University of Calgary, and the University of Western Ontario.
Census Analyser (University of Toronto):
The
Census Analyser from the University of Toronto's Computing in the
Social Sciences and Humanities (CHASS) allows users to subset
variables from the Individual Microdata Files (public use microdata
files) for the following census years: 1971, 1981,1985, 1991 and
1996.
LANDRU (University of Calgary):
The
LANDRU extraction software at the University of Calgary provides
the ability to search for files containing variables of interest, and
to create a custom-designed subset, available for ftp'ing. The
project has many of the high use files, such as the General Social
Survey and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth,
but does not yet have all the surveys available from Statistics
Canada through the DLI.
EQUINOX (University of Western Ontario):
The Equinox System
IDLS provides the ability to create subsets of most data from the
DLI. There is a search engine to assist in finding surveys of
interest.
Comments or questions regarding the surveys and their use should
be directed to the UNB Libraries Data Librarian, rather than to the
developers and providers of the software.
