Data Liberation Initiative [DLI]
Terms of Agreement
Under the Data Liberation Initiative, UNB Libraries users accept the
following conditions set by our agreement with Statistics Canada:
- The Data Liberation Initiative will offer UNB Libraries, effective
immediately and for a five-year period, timely access to standard Statistics
Canada data products, such as public use microdata files (non-identifiable datasets containing characteristics pertaining to surveyed units), standard offline electronic products containing aggregate data and geography files in available electronic formats.
- The Government of Canada is the owner, or the licensee, of the
intellectual property rights (including copyright) in these data
products, and this Agreement is only a license to acquire and use
these data products. No title or other rights are conveyed by this
Agreement. Should a member withdraw from participation in the DLI, Statistics Canada will require that use of all data provided through the DLI be discontinued.
- These data products are provided 'as is', and the owner makes no
warranty, either express or implied, including but not limited to,
warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
- These data products are provided to UNB Libraries for the exclusive purposes of
teaching, academic research and publishing, and/or planning of
educational services by UNB Libraries, and may not be used for any other
purposes without the explicit written approval, in advance, of
Statistics Canada.
- These data products are to be made available only to educators,
students and staff members of UNB Libraries (referred to here-in as "authorized
users") and only while they have such status with UNB Libraries.
- Authorized users and other persons associated with UNB Libraries are prohibited
from using these data products in the pursuit of any commercial or
income-generating venture either privately, or under the auspices of
this institution. Authorized users shall not attempt to re-identify the records on the microdata files so as to relate the particulars to any individual person, business or organization.
- The distribution of any data obtained under this agreement outside UNB Libraries
through sale, donation, transfer or exchange or any portion of these
data in any way is expressly prohibited, with the exception of
distribution to bona fide participants in the Data Liberation
Initiative (the latter will be handled by the UNB Data Librarian).
- Authors using data obtained through the DLI in research communications such as scholarly papers, journals and the like, are required to cite Statistics Canada as the source of these data.
- A copy of any portion of these data may be retained by an authorized
user, following the conditions defined in this agreement.
- All authorized users shall be made aware of these conditions.
