Types of Documents in the Grantbooks

As noted in the Background to the Grantbook Database, the Grantbooks record the distribution of Crown Land, but the series of bound volumes contain patents, appointments, charters of incorporation, native land claims and sundry other items, in addition to the grants and property leases.

The following are examples of some of the document types included in the Grantbooks. Note that these are samples only and are the only grants available in digital format. To order a copy of grants in which you are interested, please contact the Provincial Archives.

Many people doing research are interested in other sources of information about the province and its peoples. See the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick web site for information on local and family history, and the historical resources available through the UNB Libraries' Electronic Text Centre site.

I. The Grants

One of the interesting grants in the Grantbooks is from Benedict Arnold, who with others, was granted land in Fredericton (New Brunswick) in 1788. Searching the Grantbook Database for "Arnold" as a last name gives this result:

    ARNOLD, BENEDICT
    Volume: B, page 346, Grant number 154

Original province of registration: New Brunswick
    Nova Scotia registration date: -----
    New Brunswick registration date: 1788/03/25

    Accompanying plan: No

    Acreage: 13 acres

Place and County: FREDERICTON PARISH, York County

The information indicates that Grant 154, located in Volume B, page 346, deals with the grant to Benedict Arnold, and that there is no plan accompanying the grant. An electronic image of the Benedict Arnold grant is provided to show what a typical group grant looks like. A request to the Provincial Archives for a copy of this grant would result in a paper copy mailed to you.

II. Grants with Plans

Some grants include a plan showing the land granted. If there is a plan, the search result will indicate this. In the search result, the grantee, David Duncan has been assigned land in Restigouche county, and the search indicates that there is an accompanying plan or map of the land, which in this case, is an island.

    Duncan, David
    Volume: 63, page 0, Grant number 10626

Original province of registration: New Brunswick
    Nova Scotia registration date: -----
    New Brunswick registration date: 1863/07/09

    Accompanying plan: yes
    Acreage: 9 acres
Place and County: Addington, Restigouche County
    Comments: an island

III. Patents

Occasionally, patents are listed in the Grantbooks. In this example, the patent is for a potato digger.

    Nova Scotia registration date: -----

IV. Licences

As well, licences (licenses) are sometimes found in the grant books. In this case, a licence to a parcel of land is assigned to the Chief of Miramichi Indians and the tribe.
