CENSUS 1996: UNLOCKING THE NUMBERS

USING PRINTED VOLUMES:

The printed volumes are being released over several years and contain census characteristics at varying levels of geography. To date, we have received the following printed volume from the Census of Population, available for consultation in the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department on the third floor of the Harriet Irving Library:
  • Nation: Population and Dwelling:
Population counts and dwelling counts at the geographic levels of Canada, province, Census subdivisions, census divisions, census metropolitan areas, Census and census agglomerations.
We also have several publications from the Census of Agriculture, including:
  • Profile of Canadian Farm Operators:
Characteristics of farm operators responding to the Census of Agriculture questionnaire, including work done,farm-related injuries, and selected Census agricultural variables.

USING THE STATISTICS CANADA WEB SITE:

There are tables available for consultation on the Statistics Canada web site under the Census 1996 page and on the Canadian Statistics page. Both can be reached through the Statistics Canada web page at www.statcan.ca and selecting either "1996 Census" or "Canadian Statistics."
  • Census 1996 web page:
Census data are available for age and sex; marital status/common law; families (number, type and structure); structural type of dwelling and household size; immigration and citizenship, mother tongue, home language, and knowledge of official languages. Geographic level varies (see chart) and definitions are provided. More data will be released on the date indicated on the web site.
  • Canadian Statistics:
This section includes data from the 1996 Census as well as from other sources. Most of the data are available at the federal and provincial level, with population characteristics of mother tongue, home language, official language, and immigration for Census Metropolitan Areas as well.

USING THE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS, DATA AND MAPS WEB PAGE:

From the Department home page you can get access to several licensed data bases including:
  • Cansim: Canadian Socio-economic Information Management System is available without charge to UNB & STU students, faculty and researchers through the University of Toronto web site (Note: access through the Statistics Canada web site costs $3.00 per CANSIM time series retrieved). CANSIM has over 750,00 time series containing both current and historical data. Caution: Sub-provincial data can be difficult to identify through CANSIM.
  • ESTAT: This package allows for the mapping of a few census variables (Population & dwelling counts) at the federal, provincial, census division, and census sub-division level. Access ESTAT through the link on the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department web page and when prompted, enter the user id (dliunb) and password (estat).
  • Data Files: Under the Data Liberation Initiative, data are available through software called Beyond 20/20 for small geographic areas. This is the only source at the moment for data at the enumeration area level and has data for all characteristics at the CSD, CMA, CT and FSA levels. For those who are comfortable with computers, the software and data files are available for downloading from the Data Library web page. Alternatively, the files can be accessed at the workstation in the Government Documents, Maps and Data Department during normal working hours.

AT THE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS, DATA AND MAPS DEPARTMENT:

In addition to assistance with data files and other Statistics Canada publications, as well as those from other government departments, drop by the Government Documents, Data and Maps Department and talk to the staff about your research. Other tools we have that might be of help include:
  • GEOREF:
A CD-ROM which attempts to provide a guide to Census geography and relate 1991 geography to 1996 geography. The CD-ROM gives equivalences between 1991 and 1996 enumeration areas, for example. Population counts are also provided.
  • Postal Code Counts:
This CD-ROM provides population and dwelling counts by six-character postal code for all of Canada.
