OF
NEW BRUNSWICK

PREFACE

What are the characteristics which define the New Brunswick population? When the Census of Population was conducted by Statistics Canada in May 1996, we obtained a snapshot of the province in that year. Questions asked in the census captured information about ethnicity, linguistic ability, labour force participation and education levels, and sources of income.

Statistics Canada and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, along with several partner agencies, have launched the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI), a joint project designed to increase access to both data files from the 1996 Census of Population and the cartographic files produced by the Geography Division. What does that mean for researchers, students and faculty served by the UNB Libraries?

The following pages present simple thematic maps prepared using ArcView 3.0 and both data and geographical files from the 1996 Census. The maps were created by Siobhan Hanratty, with the assistance of Y.C. Kok, who participated in a work study project in the Spring of 1998. These are examples only; the ability to create maps which reflect other aspects of New Brunswick life is available at the fingertips of the researcher.

Merry Christmas, John!
[Think of this as a work in progress...]
