Hunting the Elusive Journal Article Monday, Jan. 9

This session will teach you to track down the right articles for your research. Learn when and why journal articles are the type of publication you need. Learn which databases offer you the choicest hunting ground, and how to use them to your best advantage. Learn to judge the usefulness of an article through its citation: Is it peer reviewed? Is it current? What subjects does it cover? Finally, learn how to capture the full text of a journal article, whether it is available in print or online.

All UNB and STU faculty, students and staff are entitled to free accounts on RefWorks, the web-based bibliographic management program licensed and supported by UNB Libraries. This one-hour session is intended for users of Reference Manager and other networked or desktop bibliographic management software packages. It will cover
  • the pros and cons of switching to RefWorks
  • how to switch to RefWorks
  • how your experience with other software can be applied to RefWorks
  • where to get help and more training.

RefWorks is a great new web-based tool provided by UNB Libraries to help you organize the material that you want to refer to in your essays, research papers, thesis, or dissertation. This hands-on introductory session will teach you to:
  • create, organize and search through your citations,
  • import citations from indexing and abstracting services,
  • build your bibliography,
  • easily add references to your paper in the citation style of your choice.

Finding Dissertations and Theses Monday, Jan. 16

Dissertations and theses are a useful source for advanced research on scholarly topics. They provide a good starting point for your research through the use of their extensive bibliographies. You can also find out the state of the research in a particular subject area. This session will explain how to search the ProQuest Digital Dissertations database for dissertations and theses. Learn what is available Online in full text, and how to access those theses and dissertations that are available in print only. Other sources for dissertations and theses will also be covered.
In the News: Finding Newspaper Stories and Current Events Monday, Jan. 30

Whether you are looking for newspaper stories as primary historical documents, or just want to keep up on current events, this session will help you. Starting with the essential information that you need to track down a story, we will show you how to use print and electronic indexing tools to identify newspaper material. Then, we will track down the publications themselves, in print, microform or online through UNB Libraries' subscriptions. Finally, we will look at the free, online versions of an array of newspapers.
Citation Indexes: Web of Science and Scopus Wednesday, Feb. 1

Citation Indexes: Whose research is being used? What journals have the most impact on a discipline? How many authors have cited your publications? Citation indexes are unique in allowing users to explore information transfer within and between disciplines. This session will cover the databases included in the Web of Science as well as SCOPUS. At the end of the session, participants will know when and how to use citation indexes, the strengths and weaknesses of various citation indexes, and key searching strategies.
LION Taming: Discovering Literature Online Monday, Feb. 6

Literature Online (LION) is a powerful research tool that every student of English literature should know about; biographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, e-journals, one of the most respected bibliographies in the field of English studies, plus over 350,000 works of poetry, prose and drama in full-text... all available from a single database. Explore the various sources for reference and criticism in LION, discover the extensive collection of full-text works available (including LION's links to Early English Books Online), and learn how to use LION's flexible search capabilities creatively and effectively.
Cochrane Reviews for Evidence-Based Health Care Wednesday, Feb. 8

Cochrane Systematic Reviews of the effects of health care interventions are considered the gold standard in evidence-based health care worldwide. The reviews are accessible through UNB Libraries as part of the EBM Reviews database. Attendees will learn how Cochrane Reviews are prepared and how they are used to guide practice. They will have hands-on practice in using the EBM Reviews database to find reviews, and practice reading a Cochrane review. The instructor for this 1.5 hour session is the co-representative of the UNB Cochrane Network Site.
Finding Statistics in the Social Sciences and Humanities Monday, Feb. 13

How can you find the statistics you need efficiently? There are strategies and tools that can make the job easier. We will cover some of the key sources for Canadian and international statistics in this session, using examples chosen by participants as test cases. By the end of the session, participants will have a solid foundation for effective searching of the numbers they need.

Find that Tune: Music Resources at UNB Libraries (featuring Naxos Music Library) Wednesday, Feb. 22

Researching a topic in music? The library has a selection of great resources available, including the Naxos Music Library, an online collection of over 125,000 tracks of classical, jazz and world music. This session provides an overview of music-related resources available at the library, with special focus on using the Naxos Music Library. Learn about key materials available in the library's reference collection, learn how to use Quest to find music-related books and other materials, and learn about some of the best places to find and locate journal articles and reviews. Finally, get an in-depth look at the Naxos Music Library, and learn how use Naxos to find recordings of specific works, explore the music of particular historical eras, or discover the music of countries and cultures around the world.
Do it with Style: Avoiding e-Plagiarism in the Social Sciences with the Help of APA Monday, Feb. 27

This short workshop will focus on how the APA citation style - the standard most often used in the social sciences - handles the citation of electronic information sources. You will learn APA's two general formats for e-sources. You will also discover QuickBib, new automatic formatting software now available in some of the library's indexing & abstracting databases. In addition, you will get a very brief introduction to automatic APA formatting using RefWorks.
