6: Material Relating to Associated Alumnae Fundraising Campaigns. –
1947-1954. – 6 cm of textual records.
Administrative History: There were several
major fund raising campaigns undertaken by and/or contributed towards
by the Associated Alumnae since its inception in 1910. One was
the joint Alumnae/Alumni War Memorial Fund initiated to finance the
conversion of UNB’s Memorial Hall into a Student Centre; the conversion
of Memorial Hall was done in commemoration of UNB students who
died in World Wars I and II. Also, the Associated Alumnae were
responsible for the establishment of Maggie Jean Chestnut House, a
women’s residence for UNB students. Maggie Jean Chestnut
House (811 Charlotte Street, Fredericton), was originally the property
of the Bank of Montreal. Lord Beaverbrook bought the property
which he later donated to the Associated Alumnae to use as a UNB
women’s residence. The Maggie Jean Chestnut Ladies’ Residence was
opened in the fall of 1949 providing accommodation for twenty-one
female students.
