Fredericton Branch of the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers' Association fonds -- 1957-2001. -- 18.75 cm of textual records.

Administrative History: The first recorded meeting of the Fredericton Music Teachers' Association was held on May 4, 1957, with nine members in attendance. At that meeting, the following officers were elected: President James Manchip; Vice-President Mary MacLean and Secretary-Treasurer Ann Morrison. In 1961, their umbrella organization, the New Brunswick Music Teachers' Association, became incorporated as the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers' Association. According to their 1980 by-laws, the Fredericton Music Teachers' Association became officially the Fredericton Branch of the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers' Association.

The goals of the organization included: to promote progressive ideas on the teaching of music, and to encourage definite preparation for the art of teaching; to promote and maintain the status of professional music teachers in the community; to encourage definite ethical standards of professional conduct among the music teachers; to promote and assist all movements designed to improve the teaching of music and to foster the interest of the public in music and music teaching; and to stimulate a spirit of comradeship among members of the association by means of social activities.

Custodial History: Records of the Fredericton Branch of the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers' Association were held by various members of the executive until the current (2001) Secretary, Catherine Hughes-Seto, approached the UNB Archives to act as a repository for the association.

Scope and Content: This fonds documents the activities of the Fredericton Branch of the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers' Association, 1957-2001. The contents include an extensive set of minutes, correspondence, membership applications and membership lists, and newsletters. Note that minutes may include annual reports and financial records. Membership applications normally include a history of the individual's musical training and teaching experience, and may include copies of official documents.

Arrangement is alphabetical by file title.

Notes:

Title based on name of the creator. This organization is also known informally as the Fredericton Music Teachers' Association.

Arrangement: Records were received with limited organization. The current order was imposed by the archivist.

Immediate Source of Acquisition: This material was deposited on August 17, 2001, by Catherine Hughes-Seto, in her capacity as Secretary of the Fredericton Branch.

Conditions governing access: In view of the personal nature of much of the material in this fonds, access is only with permission of the President, 2nd Vice-President or Secretary of the Fredericton Branch.
