George Goodridge Roberts [textual record]. -- 1852-1905. -- 5 cm of textual records

Biographical sketch: George Goodridge Roberts, the son of Emily Goodridge and George Roberts, was born in Saint John, N. B. on 25 December 1832. He was educated at King's College, Fredericton, earning a master of arts degree in 1854. Following graduation, he joined the teaching staff of the Collegiate School, where his father was headmaster. Ordained a deacon in 1856 and a priest the following year, he served as rector of the Parish of Douglas until 1861, when he was appointed rector of St. Ann's Church, Sackville. Twelve years later he was named rector of Christ Church Parish Church (St. Anne's), Fredericton, and in 1890 was made a canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton. The University of New Brunswick awarded him an honorary doctor of philosophy degree and an honorary doctor of divinity degree in 1860 and 1901 respectively. He married Emma Wetmore Bliss, the daughter of George Pidgeon Bliss in 1857, and they had 6 children, five of whom survived to adulthood. Canon Roberts died at Fredericton on 11 October 1905.

Scope and content: This series contains documents relating to the professional career of Church of England clergyman George Goodridge Roberts. It includes his degrees from King's College (Fredericton), his certificates of ordination, his certificates of admittance to rectories and to the canonry and his honorary degrees. Also included are copies of his obituary as well as a copy of a resolution passed by the wardens and vestry of Christ Church Parish Church (St. Anne's) on his death.
