Administrative history: The Charles G. D. Roberts collected letters project was initiated by University of New Brunswick English professor Desmond Pacey about 1973. A university administrator, educator and literary critic, Pacey was instrumental in collecting copies of letters written by Charles G. D. Roberts from various repositories in Canada and the United States. He also obtained a few original and a number of copies of Roberts's letters from the writer's friends, acquaintances and family. He was aided in his efforts by researcher assistants Jogesh Mahanti and Graham Adams.
Following Pacey's premature death in 1975, Margo Dunn restructured the project to make it more manageable. She continued to collect letters, typing transcripts of many of them. She also revised annotations that had been completed, and added to source materials for further annotation. Until 1980 Dunn worked alongside Margaret Jarvie, who organized the collected material, Susan Clancy, who acted as typist and Laurel Boone, who provided research and other assistance. Poet and UNB English professor Fred Cogswell assumed Pacey's supervisory role, continuing with the project until its completion. In the late 1970s Robert Gibbs, a UNB colleague of Cogswell, acted as his assistant. The Roberts collected letters project culminated, in 1989, with the publication of The Collected Letters of Charles G. D. Roberts, edited by UNB Ph.D. graduate Laurel Boone.

Scope and content: This fonds documents activities relating to the Charles G. D. Roberts collected letters project, most notably, the acquisition of copies of his letters, the completion of research and the preparation of the published volume. It also documents the career of Canadian literary figure Charles G. D. Roberts and reflects his varied activities as a writer, an editor and a promoter of Canadian literature.
This fonds consists of 4 series: 1. Charles G. D. Roberts correspondence, 1868-1943, 2. project correspondence (individuals and institutions), 3. project financial, research, publishing and other records and 4. photographs
It contains photocopies of letters, written by Charles G. D. Roberts to family, friends, acquaintances and business associates, which form the content of Laurel Boone's, The Collected Letters of Charles G. D. Roberts. A very few original letters written by Roberts and copies of several letters written to him are included.
The fonds also contains the working files of the project which include correspondence, financial records, research material and draft typescript manuscripts, as well as photographs of Charles G. D. Roberts and his family, friends and acquaintances. Many of these images were included in the published volume.
