Articles and Columns.--1945-1994.-- 304 cm of textual records

Scope and content: This series documents Trueman's literary career with respect to the research, writing, and editing of more than 300 articles which appeared in a variety of Canadian and American periodicals. It also documents the stages of production of his newspaper series and newspaper columns, particularly "Stuart Trueman" and "Stuart Trueman Reports", which were published in The Telegraph Journal and The Evening Times-Globe following his retirement in 1971. This series also reflects Trueman's literary contribution to the promotion of New Brunswick tourism.

This series consists of research material and research notes as well as rough drafts, typed drafts, and newspaper clippings of articles and columns. Letters to the editor discussing Trueman's published articles, columns, and special series are also included.

This series is comprised of 6 subseries: 1. Articles and Columns (unidentified), 2. Articles (identified), 3. Columns (identified), 4. Special Newspaper Series, 5. Finding Aids, 6. Reaction.

Subseries 1, Articles and Columns (unidentified) includes material which could not be identified easily as either a column or an article. It also contains 69 notebooks and 3 activity calendars in which Trueman recorded story ideas, travel notes and appointments. Subseries 2 and subseries 3 include materials identified as articles and columns respectively.

Subseries 5, Finding Aids includes materials useful in the identification of columns and articles by their titles and dates of publication. Of particular note is an article (story) index created by Trueman. It consists of 265 file cards which record titles of literary articles, the dates when they were written and rewritten, when and where they were sent, and any action taken by publishers. The subseries also includes 7 chronological files containing lists of titles of newspaper columns with their publication dates.

Subseries 6, Reaction contains written reactions to Trueman's newspaper columns, special series, and articles. It includes 1 box of unsorted responses to a readers' poll taken by the editor of The Telegraph-Journal in 1981 to determine the popularity of Trueman's weekly column.

Overall file arrangement of subseries 1, subseries 2, subseries 3 and subseries 4 is by stage of production. File arrangement of subseries 5 and subseries 6 is random.

Arrangement of rough draft and draft articles and columns within each file is random.

Title based on contents of series.

The designation "rough draft" refers to handwritten and heavily-marked typed copies of manuscripts. The designation "draft" refers to typed copies of nearly-completed and completed manuscripts.

A number of Trueman's literary articles were published in his newspaper columns, and many also were included as chapters in his books. See series 2, Books for drafts of book chapters.

Newspaper articles written by Trueman and published in The Telegraph-Journal and The Evening Times-Globe prior to 1971, when he was employed by them as a reporter and editor, are located in series 4, Editor.
